When Isaac Cohen arrived in Mexico from Syria in 1920, with no job prospects and no money in his pocket, he decided to do what he had learned from an early age: sell. Some years later, in 1930, he moved into an 18th-century property in the heart of downtown San Miguel de Allende to house his business and his growing family. At that time, the house had only one floor, which was partially finished, as well as a vegetable patch and area for horses at the back. In those days, Isaac focused on selling and advertising all kinds of products, from corn and candles to soap, fabric, clothes and perfumes. His clientele was made up of local people and those from the rural communities surrounding San Miguel de Allende.

They flocked to his shop, which stocked everything they needed, and if anything was missing, Mr. Cohen could get his hands on it. Over the years, the business flourished, and, in 1943, Mr. Cohen decided to expand his premises, building a second floor with bedrooms for himself and his family. This is when the unique façade of the property came to life, earning the nickname “Noah’s Ark”, as a result of the numerous animals that are sculpted out of pink stone on the balconies and cornices of the façade. This is the story of how this simple family store turned into a factory for manufacturing faucets, wrought iron furniture and tiles, which were in great demand at the time.
